Family Photo Sessions: What You Need to Know

About The Author

Are you ready? The leaves are changing and the crisp, cold air is finally feeling like fall! We’ve put together some things to consider as you prepare to capture your holiday photos this season.

How to dress for family photos

  • Infants and young children will be happier when dressed warmer as the temperature drops.
  • Mix textures to create interest! Silk, cotton, and denim will add great contrast to your photos.
  • Choose a color palette to create inspiration.
  • Lay out your outfits to see how they work together.
  • Avoid bold patterns, as it may draw attention to one person.
  • Keep it simple. Your outfits do not have to be extravagant!

When to capture family photos

For outdoor photos: we recommend scheduling your session near sundown between October and November before the holiday rush kicks in. This allows you ample time to receive them from the photographer, order your cards, and then deliver in a timely manner.

For indoor photos: scheduling your session will likely rely on the photographer’s studio schedule, but we recommend contacting them by October at the latest in hopes your session can occur before the end of November.

Ultimately, having your final edited photos in hand by the end of November is ideal.

When to send your cards

  • Thanksgiving cards: early–mid-November
  • Christmas cards: end of November–mid-December
  • Holiday cards: December 1st–early January

Get more out of your photos

Now that you’ve got a ton of great photos of your family, put them to good use! Create a photo book featuring all final photos from the session, a custom calendar showcasing your favorite pictures, a printed mug with your favorite photo, or some loose leaf photo prints for around the house. These photos will last a lifetime!
